San Francisco - 5 oz Class Type I, Small Font #, w/ Curved Stem Nines .75



Following all of the lot numbers known to exist, I place Type I oval hallmark, small font serial number with curved stem nines in 999.75 fineness next in chronological order. The serial numbers range from No. 5 to the mid 1500's. Type I oval hallmark, small font serial number with curved stem nines in 999.75 fineness ingots are all stamped with the weight on the reverse. OZS varies between small and large capital letters through the series. 

Low serial number ingots in this series are extremely rare. In fact, No. 5 above along No. 47 and No. 60 below, are the only one and two digit serial numbers I have ever seen. Others begin in the hundreds and run to the mid 1500's.

For now, this is the only 5 oz class Type I or Type II oval hallmark series that I can precisely date. With a U.S. Mint Service Bar Delivery receipt, ingot No. 882 thru No. 1018 can be dated to December 28, 1942. Accompanying paperwork includes a Bullion Deposit Memo showing a deposit of scrap silverware on December 22, 1942. I obtained this paperwork along with ingots No. 992, No. 993 and No. 995 from Old West Gold in 2010 and since then have been able to assemble the other ingots shown below that are listed on the U.S. Mint Service Bar Delivery receipt.
